The Deputy Chairman of Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI) Visited IOCAS and the NPOCE office

Recently, a delegation of four people from Indonesia, led by Iskandar Zulkarnain, the deputy chairman for Earth Sciences, Indonesian Institute of Sciences (LIPI), visited Institute of Oceanology, Chinese Academy of Sciences (IOCAS) and the Northwestern Pacific Ocean Circulation and Climate Experiment (NPOCE) program office in Qingdao. Professor Dongliang Yuan, the vice chairman of NPOCE Scientific Steering Committee (SSC) and the deputy director of the Key Laboratory of Ocean Circulation and Waves (KLOCAW), welcomed their visit with his colleagues in the morning of September 26.

Professor Yuan chaired the welcome symposium. Prof. Zukarnain delivered a speech of “Indonesian Institute of Sciences in Competitiveness Development of Indonesia”, in which he briefly introduced the history, the development, the structure and the budget of LIPI, and emphasized its research collaboration and achievement. Prof. Yuan presented an introduction of physical oceanography studies in IOCAS, with emphasis on projects targeting the scientific objectives laid out by the NPOCE program. Several scientists of KLOCAW also showed their research highlights in the study of China Seas, the Kuroshio, the salinity budget in the Fresh Pool of the Western Pacific, and the air-sea interactions and chlorophyll bloom around Kalimantan of Indonesian, respectively. After the presentation, Prof. Zulkarnain and his delegation members were showed around the research poster. They were very interested in the research progress under the NPOCE program and expressed interests in further collaborations in ocean related research.

Prof. Yuan took the opportunity to introduce to Prof. Zulkarnain the existing collaborations between RCO/LIPI and IOCAS, the NPOCE delegation’s visit to RCO-LIPI back in August, and the preparation of the upcoming joint cruise in the Indonesian seas in middle November through early December of 2014 by both sides. The heavy duty of cruise preparation and personnel exchange called for the establishment of a joint research center between IOCAS and RCO/LIPI.  Prof. Zulkarnain agreed to such an idea and encouraged both sides to continue the efforts and progress.

In the afternoon, Prof. Zulkarnain and his delegation team were met by the director of IOCAS, Prof. Sun Song, accompanied by Prof. Yuan and the director of International Affairs Office, Dr. Li Yanwei, during which further introductions and future collaborations were presented and discussed.
